Emma Quaadvliegh has just become a widow and retired as a library director. Tired of the well-intentioned attention and pity she receives from those around her, she decides to take up the opportunity to buy a plot on an allotment. Something she had signed up for with her husband ten years ago.

With no gardening experience to speak of, and by courageously working her way through the new world of pruning, planting, fertilising and combating weeds, Emma slowly creates a whole new life for herself. With a host of fellow gardeners, administrative chaos, budding friendships and tentative steps Emma starts to blossom and find new joy in life.
